In mistake form, I think the door was unlocked for A certain kind of orator A certain kind of talk The kind that pervasively, layers discourse with hate speech A kind of permeability An open wound It’s like a significant difference I guess you would know Regardless of where it lies, fault’s a distraction for leeway Just fucking watch what your friends say, and try to grow Faces displaced with That feeling makes sense to me Sometimes it’s difficult but, so are most valuable things Epistem- STEM pandemic I, Think it’s time we reevaluate the goals of out sci(ence) (In s)olidarity we’ll often find Who we really work for
2.
Weep Send your youngest daughter off to sleep You swear the monsters stay inside their keep Concealed behind the fire that they breathe Turns out they never were the enemy Takes a village to stop a nasty Nook in a pristine place Pulling fruits from the branches that grow them out at alarming rates Fish for capital, fish for loans that may or may not decimate Not really sure how I landed this home, but the landscape is awfully strange Strain my legs as I run away Eyes shine bright, is it him, or is it ambient light? Keep a fire in this abhorrent weather now as it starts to rain Suppose I’ll fester here and slowly pass as it’s all the same Tangy’s home but her door is locked as her actions defy the pain Not really sure how I landed this home, but the outcome was awful

Tokes 04:54
The worst rain we’d seen in years, our gentle baby lost we feared, Told you’d stumble home to die, dad made sure you wouldn’t that night Drove you there at 3 am, holding on with last of your strength For 18 years then after that, you gave nothing but love, his buddy our cat Tokes spend your nights laying by our sides Comfort through the worst times I’d seen in my life Tokes spend your days laying in the shade We don’t deserve your company, but you loved us anyway We lost a lot that year it seemed, and you’d sit and you’d wait and you’d watch over me Fashion a hill from the pillows you found, guilt to feel lonely, no use to feel proud Drove you home at 6 am, holding on with last of your strength For 18 years then after that, you gave nothing but love, his buddy our cat Tokes spend your nights laying by our sides Comfort through the worst times I’d seen in my life Tokes spend your days laying in the shade We don’t deserve your company, but you loved us anyway
4.
Social regress, a ninety day wait A man with a talk show telling me why it ought not to change It’s crazy how often it works that way Privatized healthcare is a fucking disgrace Routine diagnosis, and quite a clear path You act like R&D investment is a matter of simple, direct, and infallible math Yeah man, I’m sure Cialis really needed 130 million dollars in ads Because production costs about as much as it costs to co-opt research from academic labs The swells in, reasonable coverage for Those in, a fascinating tension at shore Send you kids away, send your kids to war, They’ll get what they paid for Fucking nothing
5.
Pelican 03:33
It can only take, so many shapes, a jargon-filled letter for a colloquial age But I’m lost like you I wrote the damn manuscript but that’s nothing new The star was a pelican, anchovy be diligent, he’ll suffocate you as he strains through his beak You’ll be lost like me Sell yourself short or you’ll float out to sea Tall tales Built to fail Swallow stones, where my teeth should be I guess it’s much better than passing out with less to eat
6.
And as he walks away I nearly hear him scream everything Nameless you’d stay that way Exonerated with three-quarters pay And so the stops in it Are pulled out in collective Community defense is Unambiguous thought The pain will be exquisite But not a single change is In line for social justice They just don’t care
7.
Jetta 02:30
(This song is for Stacy, and the gentle, unending love she had for everyone she met) An all familiar sound, lacks forgiveness, eats away at those who hear it There are things too grotesque to speak plainly of and without metaphors Which hold them close yet soft in robust packages, packed as adages A cold attempt to keep them away But you’re still dead and I still forgot to text you back that day So I’ll try to grow like your garden That you would have tended But plans are upended (appended) And plants at their roots At their roots And I’m afraid that I might let them die But I hope you’d forgive me
8.
Ideas 03:28
Underneath the meadow, fire feeding growth to shield a fate Holding closely a book of your favorite flowers that grow in your home state Laid and pressed in gently, cursive names which line them at the base And quite a few months later the basin’s lined with the soot you feel on your face I would hope that it makes sense Destroy something beautiful Give up something beautiful Just like the prairie I believe my lungs burn every day Whichever path it takes I hope your father’s home is out of way Street cars, tons of asphalt, keep us mostly protected where we stay But we’re the ones who caused it, we’re the ones who did this
9.
Treponema 04:10
Hold the line, exhaust your resource, full of participants Withhold medication, with old corpses to spend Who the fuck do you think most feels the repercussions? It doesn’t stop at Tuskegee it only begins Don’t go Look for a fault When you know Who paid the price Dehumanized work, an attempt to erase Where’d you go? Wonder why it gives less than it takes You should know

about

Most of these songs focus on the loss of life which pervades our personal lives, as well as acknowledging the death and pain which preceded and built the institutions we are forced to interact with on the day-to-day. Or something like that, dude I don’t know I’m not a poet. Interpret them how you must, I’m just grateful that they exist and that someone gives enough of a shit to listen to them.

Thank you to everyone who made this album happen, most earnestly to Nick and Larson who give these songs their emotional power and rhythm. Thanks to Derek who made these songs sound full of life, which can often be lost in the engineering, mixing, and mastering process. And also for telling me that ‘Exquisite’ sounds like Suis la Lune because that band fucking ruled. As always, thanks to anyone who has ever listened to our shit, made us food on tour, let us sleep in your house, or given us money to keep going. Thanks to Hotel Hillcrest (RIP), Pinball Jones (RIP), Seventh Circle, and many other DIY spots for letting us play all the time, and all the photographers who have taken pics of us at those venues, so that I can show my kids that I was cool before I became boring.

I fucking hate the marketing process involved with music, so much so that it almost entirely ruins the joy of creating, performing, and sharing. Thank you all for listening and making it all worth it. Much love from Jackson, Nick, and Larson.

Thanks to our friends and their bands, who inspire us to do this fucking nonsense well into our mid 20s. I will certainly forget someone, probably someone important, but that list includes:
Rose Variety (the very best band on earth), Hotel Wifi, The Red Scare, Creek, Roseville, Ridgeway, Old Sport, Obtuse, Ribbon, Lowfaith, Lorelai (if you like any of these songs, Jake and Emily are responsible for any good music I've ever made), Only Echoes and really anything Austin has ever done, Girl In a Band, Papergirl, Aaron Saye, Abby Matzke and Erica Lafehr (our amazing partners), AJ Frankson, Miranda Reinert (zine-lord), Joe Wood (and his 2am voicemails), Asher Korn, Bri Romo, Monty Daniel, Kara and Jess, Brad "Owen" Smith, Derek W (and Choice Coin ofc), Rachel Telljohn, Kev Olsen (our sweet king), Adam Smith (so thankful for your tofu tacos and Crushed!?), Perry Froelich (I miss you bb), Gala, Cameron, Becca, Jakob, Nate Rodriguez, Dillon and Ribbon and every other beautiful thing Dillon has ever made, Ray and the rest of the Hecks, Jared (Creek), The Crooked Rugs and Nolan for always responding with nice things to our instagram stories. Surely we have forgotten someone who is reading this wondering why we don't care. Memory is fleeting and often times difficult to conjure, if you are reading this far, I would bet you mean more to us than you could ever know.
